Pakistan: Three more bears rescued - Azad, Sawan and Nita
2 August 2011
We wanted to share some wonderful news straightaway with Animal Protectors.
Three more bears have been rescued and saved from a life of bear baiting by WSPA and our partner in Pakistan, the Bioresource Research Centre (BRC).
There are two male bears - Azad, meaning ‘free’ and Sawan (pictured here), meaning ‘month of love’ - and one female named Nita, meaning ‘moral’.
Each bear spent the first few years of its life being cruelly forced to fight at bear baiting events, where they would have been attacked by trained dogs for ‘entertainment’.
Rest and treatment
We are pleased to say that all three bears are now safely at the WSPA-funded Balkasar sanctuary and the BRC staff there are giving each of them treatment for their injuries.
It’s thanks to your constant support as an Animal Protector that we are able to continue to protect bears like Azad, Sawan and Nita from cruelty and suffering. We’ll bring you more news as soon as we know more on how they are doing…
Part one of three - Bali: puppy diaries
20 July 2011
After a weekend of caring for two eight week old street puppies, Joanna Tuckwell, WSPA project manager in Bali, shares with Animal Protectorssome excerpts from her diary….
Friday: first night with the puppies
We found these two tiny street puppies, scared and homeless, living in a hole outside a temple. I’m caring for them over the weekend before they’re taken in by our local partner, the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), to be re-homed.
I washed both of them and gave them each a treatment for parasites. We’ve named them Brown and White for the time being. It’s crucial I watch them for any signs of rabies, the killer disease we’ve been working so hard to eradicate on the island, with the help of our invaluable WSPA supporters.
I’m a bit worried because White wants to hide all the time, which can be
a early sign of rabies. As she’s not showing any other clinical signs, such as lack of appetite or fear of light, I think she’s just very scared.
On Monday they will get their first rabies vaccination at the BAWA clinic and, of course, be neutered before they are able to be adopted.
Saturday: Just playful little puppies
Brown cried a lot in the night, but some cuddles helped, and White was growling in her sleep. But both puppies are eating well, and beginning to venture out to explore their surroundings when they think I’m not looking!
Progress with the puppies is good. I’m able to handle Brown, the more confident of the two, and White seems to be curious, though more reserved.
Brown has already learned to use the newspaper in the corner of the room for going to the toilet, which is very clever at her age. She will certainly need another worm tablet, but she seems to be more comfortable than yesterday.
White is resting a lot, but is eating regularly and is also playing with Brown under the bed, so I will let her take her time and just keep an eye on her. More news soon…
