£3 a month over a year could buy 20 flasks used by our scientists to grow breast cancer cells in the laboratory, helping them to understand how cancer cells work, and to develop new treatments.
£6 a month could buy 100 microscope slides every month, used by our scientists to study cancer samples in minute detail. This helps them understand the different types of breast cancer, and provides clues as to how they could be treated more effectively.
£10 a month could go towards processing blood samples from 30 people as part of the Breakthrough Generations Study, which seeks to pinpoint the exact causes of breast cancer. If breast cancer is to be prevented, we must first understand why it happens, and find out who is most at risk.
Breakthrough campaigns for better breast cancer services, and promotes breast cancer education and awareness. Breakthrough also carry out vital research into different types of breast cancer at their Breakthrough Research Centre in London and their Breakthrough Research Units across the UK to enable more effective and kinder treatments to be developed for women in the future.
- One in nine women in the UK will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. Research is the only way to help us find answers to the many unanswered questions about the causes and treatment of this disease, and Breakthrough Breast Cancer is at the forefront of this vital research.
- Breakthrough's scientific work ultimately aims to prevent thousands of cases of breast cancer each year by discovering the causes of the disease, finding methods of prevention and developing new treatments, with results being translated as rapidly as possible into practical help for patients.
- Breakthrough Breast Cancer's groundbreaking research has led to five clinical trials for potential new treatments - a remarkable achievement for such a young charity. One of these clinical trials is for PARP inhibitors, a potential treatment for women with certain types of hereditary breast cancer.
- Breakthrough Breast Cancer opened the first centre in the UK dedicated specifically to breast cancer research - The Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre, which is based in the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Building at The Institute of Cancer Research in London. Scientists at the centre are developing new and more effective ways to prevent, diagnose and treat breast cancer
- Breakthrough Breast Cancer is opening three new research units across the UK in Edinburgh, King's College London and Manchester, where scientists will investigate different forms of breast cancer and work towards new treatments. Regular donations are vital to their future as Breakthrough have agreed to commit five years of funding to each of the new units.
