Information on Charities
Charities are an integral part of our society and a source of comfort and relief for many people who live in the UK.
In fact, charities are such a ubiquitous part of our lives that it is rare to come across someone who does not support or rely on the aid of a charity.
Although there are many organizations that undertake community-minded and very wonderful ventures, only those regulated by the Charity Commission are considered registered charities. There are also some organizations, such as religious groups and charities with very small annual incomes, which are considered to be excepted charities.
There are approximately 170,000 registered charities in the UK with another 22,000 subsidiary charities and countless unregistered organizations with charitable purposes. The massive size of the third sector allows it to be a large driving force both politically and economically. In fact, it is estimated that registered charities alone spend approximately £35 billion every year in England and Wales.
If you are considering offering support to a charitable organization, there are plenty to choose from. You can begin narrowing down your search by considering what type of charity you would like to support. Generally speaking, charities' objectives fall among the following categories:
- Advancement of health and elimination of disease, including promotion of healthy lifestyles and funding of health and science research.
- Environmental protection, including wildlife protection and the promotion of animal welfare.
- Promotion of human rights, including efforts to end impoverishment, abuse, and disaster relief.
With so many worthy causes to choose from, the best thing to do is to support a charity that fits with your passions and your values. By sticking to what inspires you, you will be more likely to continue offering long term support and will certainly feel an extra bit of joy knowing that your contribution is making a difference.
