Mental Health Foundation

Founded in 1949, the Mental Health Foundation is a leading UK charity that provides information, carries out research, undertakes campaigns and works to improve services for anyone affected by mental health problems, whatever their age and wherever they live, fighting to bring mental health out into the open so people no longer feel ashamed or alone.

The Mental Health Foundation is a charity, so they can only do that work with your support.

A gift of £20 can help The Mental Health Foundation identify and reach families who need help.
For families who are struggling with the stigma and secrecy of mental illness, The Mental Health Foundation information packs are a lifeline. They can help families to understand what their loved ones are going through and tell people where to go for help. Just knowing that they are not alone can help prevent someone taking their own life.

The Work of the Mental Health Foundation

The Mental Health Foundation is fighting to bring mental health out into the open so people no longer feel ashamed or alone.

The Mental Health Foundation has a reputation for robust, highly regarded research.

For 60 years, they have been producing pioneering research to help people survive, recover from and prevent mental health problems.

They do this by:

  • learning what makes and keeps people mentally well
  • researching what will lessen the impact that mental illness has on someone's everyday life, their relationships with their family and friends, and their opportunities for education and employment.
  • communicating their findings to a wide range of people
  • turning their research into practical solutions that make a difference to people's lives

The Mental Health Foundation aim to lead the way in helping everyone to understand and look after their own mental health.

They work throughout the UK on research and projects that address the mental health needs of children, adults of working age, and people in later life.

The Mental Health Foundation reach millions of people every year through our work with the media to encourage a better understanding of mental illness.

Their website www.mentalhealth.org.uk is the most comprehensive source of mental health information in Europe. With over 2.5 million people visiting the website every year they are experts at reaching the people online who need help.

The Mental Health Foundation also send out more than 100,000 booklets every year to help people looking for more information, for themselves or loved ones, who are experiencing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and self-harm.

In everything they do they work with people who have had mental health problems and use their experiences to improve the support available.

The Mental Health Foundation is independent of any one stakeholder group, funder or way of looking at mental health. More than 80% of their funding comes from voluntary donations.

What your support would help The Mental Health Foundation achieve:

  • £25 will help to fund vital research into the most effective ways of supporting people with mental health problems.
  • £50 will help to change attitudes and change lives by breaking down the taboo surrounding mental illness.
  • £100 will help to give young people practical ways to cope with their parent's mental illness and to safeguard their own mental health.
  • £250 will help to improve the quality of support for older people suffering from dementia.
